Dr. Curtis Cunningham

Associate and Executive Director K-12 Partnerships

Curtis is a career educator with over two decades of experience in education working with K-12 systems and higher education. He completed his bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri; his Master’s degree in Gifted Education at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri; and his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville.

His career started in the classroom where he was identified as a teacher-leader and served on several district-wide committees related to curriculum and professional learning opportunities. In 2009, Curtis was hired as one of six professional learning specialists for Springfield Public Schools in Springfield, Missouri. In this role, he contributed to the success of a nationally- recognized teacher induction program that focused on support for early-career teachers.

In 2015, Curtis accepted a faculty position at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas and in 2020 was promoted to Chair of the Departments of Teacher Education and Graduate Education. In 2022, he received the faculty excellence award for his leadership and contributions to the JBU community.

During his time as Department Chair, Curtis authored numerous grants totaling $3.2 million; these grants provided professional development for hundreds of teachers throughout the state of Arkansas. Curtis also works as a consultant with the Arkansas Department of Education serving as one of two Cognitive Coaching agency trainers in the state of Arkansas.

Outside of work, Curtis enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and watching baseball.
